An oversized chandelier is not simply a large light fitting. Above about 100 cm diameter, a chandelier stops behaving like a decorative object and starts behaving like a piece of structural furniture: it has a finished weight, a fixing method, a delivery crate and an installation sequence. This guide covers the four decisions that actually determine whether an oversized chandelier works in a high-ceiling room — and the order to take them in.
Start with the room, not the chandelier

Almost every oversized chandelier that disappoints was chosen from a photograph. A fixture that reads as generous in a 2.7 m room can look like a pendant in a double-height void, and the reverse is just as common.
- Diameter comes from the room or the opening it hangs in. In a foyer or stair void, read the width of the opening and use roughly one third of it as a starting diameter. Over a dining table, work from the table width and leave 75–85 cm of clearance above the surface.
- Overall height — the fixture body plus suspension — is set by the ceiling height and the head clearance you need at every level of the space. In a stairwell, the binding constraint is usually the landing you stand on, not the ceiling.
- Sightline decides where the centre of mass sits. From the front door you should meet the fixture roughly in the middle of the void, not staring at its underside or its canopy.
For a double-height space, the practical method is set out in how to size a chandelier for a double-height space.
How large is "oversized"?
In our collection the working thresholds are simple, and they are the thresholds we use to group fixtures:
- Oversized chandelier — 100 cm diameter and above. Typical for a two-storey foyer or a large stairwell.
- Extra large chandelier — 150 cm and above, up to and beyond 2 m. Typical for lobbies, ballrooms and atriums.
These are starting points, not rules. Several models in the collection are supplied up to 200 cm diameter on the same silhouette, with the tier count and the number of glass elements adjusted so the proportions still hold. You can see the range in oversized chandeliers and extra large chandeliers.
For a great room or a two-storey living space the sizing question is answered in chandelier size for great rooms and tall ceilings, which works through the additive width-and-depth rule and the drop a tall ceiling needs.
Weight: the number that decides everything

A large crystal chandelier is heavy, and it is heavy in a way that surprises people. The finished net weight of the assembled fixture — not the shipping weight, and not the weight of one component — is the figure your contractor needs. It determines:
- whether the ceiling can take the fixture as built, or needs additional framing or a spreader;
- the fixing method: a single structural point, a bracket, or a purpose-made plate;
- how many people are needed on installation day, and whether a lifting aid is required.
We supply the finished net weight, the recommended fixing method and load information as part of the technical drawing set, before anything is produced. More detail on the numbers is in chandelier weight and ceiling load.
Drop and suspension in high spaces

An 8 m ceiling needs a suspension that can be set on site, not a chain cut to a guessed length. On tall installations the suspension should be adjustable, and the canopy sized for the fixing point rather than for the fixture. If the ceiling void is deep, or the mounting point sits inside a coffered or recessed detail, that has to be resolved in the drawing set — it cannot be improvised from a ladder.
What to send us for a properly sized recommendation
- Room type and a section or plan drawing if you have one — a photograph of the ceiling works too.
- Ceiling height at the fixing point, and the head clearance at each landing or walkway.
- Width of the foyer opening, stair void or table.
- Voltage, dimming system and installation date.
- Destination and site access notes, especially for upper floors and tight stair cores.
Send those and you receive sizes that suit the space, plus any question we need answered before quoting. The full sequence is on the order process page, and the customisation options are set out under customization process.
Frequently asked
Can an oversized chandelier be shortened on site? The suspension can be adjusted on site on most models. The fixture body cannot be reduced — that is fixed in the drawing set.
How much lead time should I plan for? Production and international transit are quoted separately, and both are confirmed before you pay. Plan your installation date against the later of the two.
Do you ship oversized chandeliers internationally? Yes — in protective export packing designed for fragile, heavy items, with door-to-door delivery. See shipping.
