Almost every oversized chandelier that disappoints in a finished room was chosen from a catalogue photo rather than from the geometry of the space. Sizing for a double-height volume is a different exercise from sizing for a normal ceiling, and it follows a sequence. Get the sequence wrong and no amount of taste will save the room.

1. Measure the void, not the floor

For a double-height space, the useful dimensions are the width of the opening or the width of the void, the floor-to-ceiling height at the mounting point, and the eye levels the fixture will be seen from — the front door, the top landing, the sofa. A fixture is judged against the void above it, which is why a piece that looks enormous on paper can look modest once it is up.
2. Set the drop before the diameter

Drop is the dimension people get wrong, and it is the one that is hardest to fix afterwards. Two rules cover most situations:
- The lowest point of the fixture must clear head height everywhere someone stands or walks, including on every landing.
- The fixture should occupy a meaningful share of the vertical run. In a six-metre void, a fixture that hangs half a metre looks like a mistake.
Send us the mounting height and we will calculate the drop with you rather than leaving it to the installer's judgement on the day.
3. Then choose the diameter
In a foyer or void, the working rule is proportion to the opening: a fixture that reads as roughly a third to a half of the width of the void, depending on how much the architecture already occupies. In a dining room the fixture is judged against the table instead — a common starting point is about one third of the table width.
4. Check it before you buy it
Proportion is much easier to judge visually than numerically. The Chandelier Studio places a fixture to scale in a real room, checks the drop against the ceiling height and reports the mounting height and free clearance — which turns a sizing argument into a measurement.
5. Confirm the fixing point
A large crystal fixture is a structural item, not a decorative one. Before ordering, confirm what the fixture will hang from: concrete slab, timber joist, steel truss or a suspended ceiling. We provide the finished weight and load information your contractor needs to prepare the fixing.
Quick reference
| Space | Set diameter from | Set drop from |
|---|---|---|
| Foyer / double-height void | Width of the opening | Head clearance at every landing |
| Stairwell | Width of the stairwell, read from below | The full vertical run |
| Dining room | Table width | 75–85 cm above the table surface |
| Hospitality lobby | Volume and seating layout | Light level at floor and sightline from the entrance |
Check the size before you order
Send the room dimensions, ceiling height and a photo of the mounting point. We will tell you the diameter and drop that read correctly.
