A pendant is one shade on one drop: it lights the surface underneath it well and a whole room badly, which is why it usually works as the second layer over a table, an island or a bath rather than as the only fitting in a space.

Where the drop is over a bathtub the fixture is judged by position before style: under NEC 410.10(D) the zone reaches 900 mm (3 ft) horizontally from the tub rim and 2.5 m (8 ft) above the rim at every point, and anything inside that volume has to be rated for a damp location.
